The exhibition's title, "Main Switch," metaphorically signifies the diver's need for absolute body control and the nuanced regulation of every body part, mirroring the act of using a main switch to activate their physicality. This symbolism extends to an "extreme" state of existence, suggesting that engaging this switch marks the beginning of a life far beyond the ordinary, and pertaining not solely to the physiological control of the body but also to the cognitive dominion of the mind, as freediving is a sport that rigorously evaluates one's psychological fortitude.
Upon entering the exhibition, visitors are greeted by Luminescence in Red (all works 2024)—a mesmerizing video capturing the nocturnal dance of fireflies in Panglao. This introductory piece sets a tone of serene hopefulness, symbolizing the intimate connection between the athletes and their natural surroundings, and serves as a prelude to the narratives that unfold within this locale. At the heart of the gallery lies the dual-channel video work Alchemy. In the dimly lit expanse of the gallery, two large-scale standalone projection screens are designed to immerse the viewers fully into the narratives and landscapes depicted. This arrangement enables a multifaceted exploration of the moving images, encouraging viewers to navigate the space and engage with the content freely. The doubled screens simultaneously offer connected yet distinct scenes of the athletes' training sessions and the oceanic environment, fostering a dialogue between the different facets of freediving portrayed. Elsewhere in the show, video interviews with the athletes are showcased, offering a first-person perspective on the life of a freediver. These personal accounts go beyond showcasing the sport's physical demands, delving into the emotional and psychological resilience required.
At the heart of Yang's approach to videography is the concept of "watching." This involves a distinctive methodology where the camera remains stationary, embodying the role of a silent observer, almost as if it's an unobtrusive participant within the scene. Through this method, the artist transforms the act of filming into a form of quiet observation, meticulously recording the subjects of the film without their adjustment to the presence of the camera. This technique allows for a raw and authentic capture of moments, providing viewers with a window into the scenes portrayed.
Yang's fascination with freediving stems from a desire to explore a life beyond the ordinary, delving into the physical and mental control it requires. As a sport entailing immense physical and mental discipline, freediving embodies an "extreme" condition of human living, one that constantly bears the severe risk of injury and, more importantly, mental fortitude. With many pieces included in the show named after forms of spiritual practice (e.g. Alchemy, Samādhi, and Sumeru), the artist aims to unpack the life of a freediver, presenting stories that extend beyond the sport itself. "Main Switch" intricately explores the depths of both the ocean and the human spirit, utilizing the language of moving images to invite viewers into a reflection on the interplay between bodily strength and mental endurance, crafting a unique way of watching that sees beyond the surface of daily life.
